How to be a Gentleman

The non-fiction novel "How to Be a Gentleman: A Contemporary Guide to Common Courtesy" by John Bridges is a book that every guy should have...so say my dad who recommended that I read this book.  Now that I have I'm glad I did.  The book was basically written as a guide with steps, pictures and short paragraphs and not written as a lecture which made it easier to read and it was funny too.  It is a book I know I will read and reference to when I get older.  Mainly because there are some parts that reference to grown-up situations like proper wine selections and what you should do at parties.  However, there are parts I can learn and use now such as using proper introductions, how to tie a bow tie and when and when not to properly use your cell phone, email, or any electric devise.  This is the part my mom thinks is very important for teens to know.  Gentlemanly behavior is slipping away in our generation and reading such a book reminds us that being a gentleman is about common sense and courtesy and a lot of good manners.  Throughout the book it gives gentlemen tips on how to dress, how to properly use a dinner napkin and utensils, how to properly ask a girl on a date, and how to start up proper conversations just to name a few.  These are the rules I think would be most helpful at my age.  I do think showing a little class goes a long way.  I do recommend this easy to read, very helpful book to anyone young or old.

  1. I really enjoy seeing this. I totally agree that young men these days are not gentlemen anymore. I look around in school and I'm disgusted. Women are not being treated with respect. It really bothers me too, but if more people were willing to take a chance on how to be a gentlemen and treat women right, this would be the perfect book! I will definitely read this.

  3. I really liked this post because I agree that not very many teenage guys have these manners and are gentlemen anymore. This sounds like a very interesting book that everyone should read.
