I have lived a thousand years By Bitton-Jackson

Ellie Friedmann is young Jewish girl living in SamorinCzechoslovakia. Her brother, Bubi was going to school when he came back he told the family that Germany had invaded Budapest. The family had not taken his news into to consideration since there was no news to prove what he was saying the the truth. Bubi had to go to school the next day with his friend and they arrived with same news that the invasion was close. One day later and the  newspapers screamed  "Invasion". The schools later closed and a group of boys act like Nazi soldiers while Ellie was walking home, she walked faster and sobbed. The Jews are asked to give all their prized possessions to city hall, but Ellie just got a new bike and she doesn't want to give it up. Ellie's father showed the family a secret spot where he hides all his is prized possessions and asks Ellie if she makes it, to promise to remember this spot. She becomes really angered because she wants all her family to live not just one or two of the family.  Ellie hated the idea that she had to wear a yellow star symbolizing that she was a Jew and their house had to be painted a yellow star. A couple more days had past and the rules for Jews became more strict like they couldn't talk to Christans or anybody outside their religion. Ellie was only thirteen when she, along with her mother and her brother were taken to Auschwitz. Where they worked in the hot sun and served food with bugs in them since the chef doesn't really care. She finds herself to be abnormally disfigured because of the malnutrition and the intense work. They moved away from the Auschwitz camps to Plaszow the most notorious forced-labor camp in Poland. While they were there they moved constantly around in the room. Meaning they had to change beds every week, the beds were only wooden planks and Ellie and her mother were beside each other when one of the wooden beds fell on them. Ellie came out unharmed but her mother became paralyzed from that striking blow. After all the traitorous misadventure they finally evacuated out of the camps and the American soldiers provided the clothing and food. Ellie decided to go to New York to start a new life and she was staring at the Statue of Liberty she felt the hope in her heart. I feel that the only way humans can learn is to do it I'm not saying this is an option. Its sad that this was a way of life for about 4 years for the Jews.

  1. Wow! That sounds like a very good book. It looks like something I would like to read. I will have to look for it in the library.
